Upper Tract Transitional Cell Carcinoma
Upper tract transitional cell carcinoma is a cancer that is derived from the lining of the inside of the kidney. It is different than kidney cancer, imagine the location of the cancer starts is a separate an atomic structure. In the treatment for this type of cancer, the first thing that is necessary is a surveillance of the entire urinary tract as all aspects are at risk for this type of cancer. The next step is the stage to cancer appropriately with emerging technologies, to sure that we have a firm grasp over where the cancer is and how extensive it is. Once this is done, often, there is an intervention called a ureteroscopy, which seeks to diagnose this condition bypassing a very tiny camera into the urinary tract to take a biopsy.
Once this is accomplished, further treatment is often necessary in the form of definitive removal of the lesion with laser, or if it is too big, removal of the entire kidney ureter and a cuff of bladder is often necessary. This procedure can usually be accomplished with minimally invasive techniques, and recovery is usually quite good with a 24 hour stay in the hospital. For patients with unfortunate advanced disease, a referral to medical oncology will be made to combine forces in a multidisciplinary manner, with chemotherapy and surgery being important parts.
