The treatment of localized genitourinary cancer involves goal-directed therapy of removing the cancer that has spread in the human body. This may involve a surgical approach involving removal of the cancer, or of the organ housing the cancer, or of the tissues around the organ as well which may harbor microscopic diseases from the cancer. Local treatment may also involve very effective radiation therapy, to destroy the cancer where it lies. Extra therapy in the form of hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy may be indicated for different stages of localized disease. The treatment of localized disease necessarily involves a whole person focus, involving a multidisciplinary team to help patients deal with the psychological trauma of being diagnosed with cancer and to deal with any potentially harmful side effects that treatments may bring.
