Localized
The treatment of localized genitourinary cancer involves the goal-directed therapy of removing the cancer before spreads to give local tissue destruction. This may involve a surgical approach, involving removal of the cancer, or of the organ housing the cancer, or of the tissues around the organ which may harbour microscopic cancer. Local treatment may also involve very effective radiation therapy. Extra therapy in the form of hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy may be indicated for different stages of localized disease. Clinical trials involving novel surgical and multidisciplinary techniques are also employed. The treatment of localized disease necessarily involves a whole person focus, involving a multidisciplinary team to help patients deal with the psychological trauma of being diagnosed with cancer and to manage potentially harmful side effects that treatments may bring.
